When purchasing Greek yogurt always look for brands that list “live active cultures” on the label to maximize the health benefits of eating yogurt. Plain, nonfat or low-fat Greek yogurt is the best choice for those on a reduced-calorie diet or anyone seeking to increase protein intake. Be careful not to choose options that have added sugars.
Plain Greek yogurt is versatile in that it may be eaten sweet or savory and may be used as a substitute for many ingredients in cooking because it does not curdle when heated like regular yogurt. Feel free to use in place of sour cream, heavy cream, mayonnaise and cream cheese. When cooking with Greek yogurt it is best to fold it into other ingredients as stirring will cause it to become thinner. If the mixture becomes too thin after stirring in the Greek yogurt, thicken it by chilling the mixture in the refrigerator for one to two hours. Be adventurous and try it….you only have more protein and health benefits to gain! Read next week’s blog for specific substitution ideas.
